During the heyday of the Royal Navy’s presence in Portland, this early Edwardian building belonged to the First Admiral and was later used as the headquarters for the MOD police. It benefits from extensive views over Lyme Bay and is a good base to explore the island’s heritage, including Portland Castle and Portland Lighthouse. The Round Island Coastal Footpath will give you a good look at the flora and fauna, or visit Chesil beach or nearby Weymouth to enjoy its award-winning beaches. Portland is considered to be a first class location for windsurfing and is visited by thousands of sailors throughout the year. Together with Weymouth, it hosts a number of annual events including the Four Nations Windsurfing Championship. Portland Harbour’s sheltered location allows it to be used both by expert and beginner riders. Measuring 3 x 2 miles, this historical Harbour of national importance can be sailed in any wind direction.
