ObservatoryHarbour

Overlooking Portland Harbour, Portland Observatory offers comfortable, hostel-style accommodation with shared facilities for up to 24 guests in the lighthouse and adjacent annexe. It has a fully equipped kitchen, heating in all rooms with blankets and pillows provided so just bring a sleeping bag and something to eat. As you can imagine, it has amazing views and even the lounge overlooks the sea so you can get psyched up for a morning session on the water while eating your three shredded-wheat.

Portland Harbour has to be one of the best places in the country for kitesurfing. Although smoothest in a westerly, the prevailing SW wind sweeps down the natural phenomenon that is Chesil Beach and over a sandbank resulting in smooth water for most of the harbour. With four miles of flat water and huge shallow areas, all levels of rider are well catered for. There is a permit system in place for kitesurfing to ensure safety standards are as high as possible. Please check you meet requirements before making the trip.
